Online retail is narrower than every internet purchase

Paying online does not automatically make a transaction eligible. Services, subscriptions, travel, entertainment, digital goods, utilities, and some marketplace purchases may fall outside an online-retail category.

Check the cap before estimating value

A category can have a strong rate only up to a yearly spending limit. Estimate how much of your shopping falls below that cap and apply the card’s base rate to spending above it. That produces a more realistic annual estimate.

Flat-rate rewards reduce coding risk

A broad flat-rate card may be a better fit when your online purchases come from many different merchants or categories. The headline rate may be lower, but fewer purchases depend on a narrow merchant definition.

Put the numbers in context

A practical way to evaluate this category

A worked example — not a card offer

At $400 a month in eligible online retail, a hypothetical 3% return is $144 a year, versus $96 at 2%. Only count purchases that satisfy the issuer’s definition; utilities, travel and person-to-person payments are not automatically online retail.

Details that can change your result

Online groceries, subscriptions and general online retail can follow different rules. A digital wallet alone does not establish eligibility. Check exclusions, caps and the rate after a cap. Never enter the same purchase in two calculator fields.

When this category may not suit you

An online-retail bonus may add little value if your online budget mostly consists of excluded bills, travel or services. A flat-rate card can be a more predictable benchmark.

Quick answers

Questions about this card category

Do marketplace purchases count as online retail?

They may, but eligibility depends on how the marketplace and seller code the transaction and on the issuer’s exclusions.

Do streaming and digital services count?

Often they are treated as services rather than online retail. Use the issuer’s current category definition instead of assuming every online payment qualifies.

What happens to rewards after a return?

Issuers generally reverse rewards tied to a refunded purchase. The exact timing and account treatment depend on the issuer.
